The luxury segment of the hospitality industry has come to grips with the recession by offering steep discounts, hotel credits or a third or fourth night free.
The drop not only in wealthy vacationers, but also corporate travelers, has hit the segment hard.
The W Costa Rica hotel, which will offer a total of 151 rooms and is located in Guanacaste, reported that it plans to start operations in November of this year.
If growth in the number of tourists doesn’t reach 25% per year, hotel occupancy will fall from the 74% seen in the first quarter of 2001, to just 50% over the coming years.
Panama is growing and so are the number of hotels, which in 2012 will be offering over 27 thousand rooms.
