The goal of the new law is to provide optimal conditions for generating maximum efficiency and competitiveness.

In April this year a new law was approved governing the operation of free zones in the country, where many foreign companies have decided to settle because of the benefits the scheme provides.

The new law aims to establish a framework within which these workspaces will operate, ranging from the kind of activities that can be developed there, the systems that can be installed to the legal conditions that must be met.

In November 2010 the CFZ increased its sales by $ 1.84 million compared to 2009.

The statistics by the Comptroller General showed sales until November 2010 of $ 19.9 million, compared to the $ 18.09 million of the same period last year.

"The report shows an annual percentage change of 10.2% and 47.2% monthly, which indicates that November was the fastest growing month”, reports Panama America.

A study by PROCOMER indicates that for every dollar exonerated in the period between 2010 and 2014, companies in the free zone regime generated $5.7 on average for the country.

Commercial activity in Panama's free zones was 42% higher in the first 7 months of this year than in the same period in 2010.

According to the Controller General's Office transactions totaled $15,870,000 in July 2011, compared to $11,173,000 in the same period in 2010.

Activity in the Colon Free Zone Falls 10% in 2019

Last year the commercial activity of the Panamanian Free Zone totaled $18,469 million, 10% less than what was reported in 2018.

From January to December 2019 imports in the Colon Free Zone (CFZ) totaled $8,655 million, and re-exports totaled $9,814 million, decreasing by 11% and 9% compared to the same period in 2018, respectively.

In the first seven months of 2019, the commercial activity of the Panamanian Free Trade Zone totaled $10.782 million, 14% less than in the same period of 2018.

From January to July, imports in the Colon Free Zone (ZLC) totaled $5.224 million, and re-exports amounted to $5.557 million, decreasing by 12% and 16% compared to the same period in 2018, respectively.

Panama: Three More Companies Operate in Free Zone

Two companies in the food industry and one assembler of electrical panels have invested $11 million to start operating under the free zone regime in the country.

The companies are Caribbean International Foods, Inc., which is engaged in the preparation of bakery products, Industrias Romanina, S.A., which produces tomato sauces, and Quadrotek, S.A., which assembles electrical panels. The companies were founded with Spanish, Argentine and Jamaican capital.

Trade activity in Panama's Colon Free Zone in the first 9 months of this year was 9.5% higher than the same period of 2008.

For September 2009, activity was 15% higher than the same month of 2009.

These good news come weeks after users of the Free Zone reached an agreement with Martinelli's administration regarding how many taxes they must pay.

From October 1 to 3, Guatemala will be hosting a Conference on Free Zones of the Americas, where topics such as the potential and benefits of companies in the sector will be discussed.

Guatemala, September 19, 2018. - The Association of Free Zones of the Americas - AZFA - together with the Santo Tomas de Castilla Free Zone, Chamber of Industry, Chamber of Commerce and the Ministry of Economy, presented the twenty-second Conference for Free Zones of the Americas to be held from October 1 to 3 at Hotel Casa Santo Domingo, in Antigua Guatemala.
