For the fourth quarter of 2019, 15% of Guatemalan companies are expected to increase their payrolls, a proportion that is slightly lower than the 16% recorded in the same period of 2018, which could be explained by the lack of legal certainty and the recent general elections.

As reported for the first three months of the year, for the second quarter of 2019 14% of companies in the country expect to increase their payrolls.

The Ministry of Labor is preparing a bill to regulate how companies can carry out part-time hiring, starting in February 2018.

Guatemala, December 13, 2016-According to the Survey Manpower Employment Outlook for 1Q 2017 published today in Guatemala, employers report optimistic hiring plans for the period from January to March.With 22% of employers expecting to increase their levels of recruitment, 6% anticipating a decrease, 70% staying the same and 2% who did not know, the Net Employment Outlook is + 16% once the seasonal adjustment has been made.The survey reveals an increase in hiring prospects of 7 percentage points in quarterly comparison and by 1 percentage point in annual comparison.
Sales, operations and production are the areas in which Guatemalan entrepreneurs face the most difficulties in recruiting staff with the necessary skills.
Leadership, the ability to make decisions and to identify and solve problems are the skills most required by companies in Guatemala, and the most difficult ones to find when hiring staff.
In Central America, the youth unemployment rate is estimated at over 24%, while in Germany, where the dual education is practiced, youth unemployment is 6%.

When vacancies arise companies fill them paying the new employee less than before, and give them even more demanding requirements.
A Manpower study outlined in an article in Prensalibre.com notes that in Guatemala "requirements are increased when new staff are hired, however the wages offered are not in line with the international market.
For example, one company had a manager with a profile matching a salary of up to $3,138, this person resigned and his place was taken by a underling who had a salary of $1,255 and who, after the change in position, was offered $1,632. This person got a better opportunity and resigned, shortly after which the company attempted to hire a new manager with the requirements of the first but with the salary of the second.
The sector with the best availability for hiring staff is Construction, with a Net Employment Outlook of +19%.

Employers expect to increase their workforces during the next three months in all sectors. The most optimistic hiring expectations are reported in construction with a Net Employment Outlook of +19%.
In a competitive environment, companies must understand that it is better to retain qualified personnel rather than to invest funds looking in the market for workers.
