About 8% of Costa Rican consumers are interested in electronic books, and almost half of them are between 15 and 30 years old, and have a high level of purchasing power.

Entertainment, children and novels in general, are the categories of books that have boosted the business of bookstores in Costa Rica in recent years.
Between 2013 and 2014, book imports fell from $33 million to $30 million, however, in recent years that fall has stopped, because according to data from the Ministry of Finance, between 2014 and 2018 annual imports have oscillated between $27 million and $29.9 million.
Although imports have been falling in the last five years, in Costa Rica the main bookstores have reported annual increases in their sales.
The main reason why some bookstores have managed to improve their sales in recent years is that they have dedicated themselves to catering to readers' tastes and tendencies, in order to better identify their needs and better direct their promotional efforts.
The Ministry of Education in Guatemala is putting out to tender a printing service for 2.1 million textbooks.

A lull in imports of dictionaries, encyclopedias and school textbooks is the main reason behind the downward trend that has been seen in book imports in the country.
Luis Monge, president of the Costa Rican Chamber of Books, explained to Nacion.com that"bazaar bookstores, which sell school books, have been affected. A contraction of imports in general has been felt since 2014.In contrast, exports grew by 31%, to $9.8 million, in 2016, but they have not yet stabilized, as one year there is growth and another declines.Luis Amón, manager of Librería Internacional, agrees."...The executive estimates that in the country 20% of the population, more than one million people, read regularly and have the resources and capacity to consume books."
The Ministry of Education in Nicaragua is putting out to tender services for layout, printing and national distribution of books in various formats.

It has been reported that a mall being built by the Honduran company Ladylee in the province of Alajuela and has an occupancy rate of 100%.
So far 47 commercial establishments have been confirmed, according to representatives from City Mall, but they are still choosing who will fill the missing spaces in the 70 thousand square meters building dedicated to this area.
Two Costa Rican bookstores are preparing for new openings in 2015 in the country and expansion into El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua.

Taxing the income of companies that publish and sell books will speed up the deterioration of a market already affected by new technologies and lower consumption of books.
The tax package that the government intends to implement includes publishers, who will have to start paying income tax if the tax reform thrives in the Legislature. If this is the scenario, book prices will rise and in house publications will be further reduced, anticipate industry representatives.
The tender for the purchase of more than 3 million textbooks in the amount of $12 million has been declared void.
