In 2008, Honduras exported $255 million to Mexico and imported $459 million, for a total of $714 million.
The figure represents an increase of 342% when compared to the $161 million traded in 2000, the year before the signing of the Free Trade Agreement between both countries.
The Mexican consul in San Pedro Sula, Marco Antonio Blanco Garcia, told La Prensa of Honduras that in addition to trade, "a lot of Mexican capital has been invested in major cities, like San Pedro Sula and Tegucigalpa, where companies like Bimbo, Maseca, Telmex, Grupo Elektra, Banco Azteca, Credimax, Aeromexico, Satelites Mexicanos, Comex, TROPIGAS, Comunicación Vial of Central America and the TV signal distributors Televisa and Azteca operate."
The Mexican consulate held talks with the businessmen to update them on the state of the project that was signed with Guatemala and in order to know when the interconnection with Honduras will occur.
Mexican consul, Marco Antonio Blanco, explained that the project will cover from Mexico to Colombia, passing through Central America and that the objective is to form a regional electricity market that will be made up of all the state electricity companies of the participating countries.
