Exporters in Latin America and the Caribbean who market their products in Canada will probably have to improve their agricultural health and food safety (AHFS) controls if Canada approves a proposal aimed at modernizing its regulations.
A series of new rules proposed by the FDA are in public consultation with the aim of improving practices in sanitary food transportation and avoiding tampering.

Dominican Republic and Central America have agreed to unify the regulations governing organic agriculture.
The policies are based on rules by Codex Alimentarius, created in 1963 by FAO and the WHO to develop food standards, guidelines and related texts such as practices under the joint FAO / WHO Food Standard Program. The main purpose of the program is to protect the health of consumers and ensure fair trade practices as well as to promote coordination of food standards.
The proposal provides for a gradual shift in the pricing mechanism.
Within general guidelines, the proposal is valid for three years and aims to improve access to credit, training as well as business management and infrastructure.
"It also contemplates signing agreements for the National Production Council (CNP) to relocate their infrastructure and improve productivity in conjunction with programs from the Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA),” reports the article in Elfinancierocr.com.

The $7 million project looks to train and provide equipment to Central American bean and corn growers.
María Antonia Zelaya is a spokesperson for the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation in Central America. She informed that "the regional project (comprising from Panama to Belize), is divided into phases, the first one being training. This new phase aims to incorporate state of the art machinery, thus increasing corn and bean quality and output".
From March 31 to April 3, Costa Rica will bring together sixteen experts from nine countries and more than 150 people.
There will be members of the International Association of Consultants in Hydroponics and leading specialists from Peru, Mexico, Argentina, the USA, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Spain and Costa Rica as speakers who will make an introduction to the culture of protected cultivation, and they will highlight the importance of the different hydroponics methods.
