Officials from the Panamanian government are negotiating with Del Monte, Fyfess and Dole, in order to created a mixed, private-public company.
The government’s delegation includes Leroy Sheaffer, from the Agriculture Ministry; Roberto Santamaría, National Banana Director, and two delegates from the National Bank of Panamá.
After the negotiations, which are taking place in San José, Costa Rica, the Panamanian delegation will meet with Costa Rica’s National Banana Corporation (Corbana).
The evaluation commitee rejected the bid by Italian company CEDIT (Centro de Distribución de Toscana), as it failed to comply with the established requisites.
The announcement was made by José Carlos Elizondo, Coosemupar interventor.
"Elizondo commented there are three additional companies interested in acquiring the banana cooperative", reported Prensa.com.
Fyffes, a European company, bought Panamanian pineapple producer, Agro-industrials Golden West SA for $8 million.
With the purchase, estimated at $8 million, Fyffes acquired 450 hectares and the assets of Agro-industrials Golden West SA. The European company also has pineapple production properties in Costa Rica, and it hopes that the combined production from both countries will reach 50% of pineapples sold in 2010.
