Joint price negotiations for the purchase of medicines has led to better management of the budget of the Ministries of Health in countries in the region.
15 pharmaceutical companies have been shortlisted to participate in price negotiations and purchase of medicines in the region.
The Central American Integration System (SICA) has presented a certificate of prequalification to 15 pharmaceutical firms, accrediting them with engaging in joint price negotiations and purchase of medicines in the region during 2014.
Guatemala did not participate in the final joint price negotiations and purchase of medicines at the regional level in the month of June.
Since 2008, Guatemala has not participated in any regional purchase of medicines, missing out on the opportunity to make savings by buying in bulk.
The negotiations ended in June with six pharmaceutical companies, for the purchase of 19 drugs, representing savings of $16 million for the region, "... thereby allowing optimization of institutional budgets for the purchase of drugs while ensuring access to medicines for the population", reported the Pan American Health Organization.
A committee comprising representatives of the region's health authorities plans to include medicines for treating patients with AIDS in its next negotiations.
Together with the Dominican Republic, the region has concluded the joint purchase of 15 medicines worth $60 million.
The purchase was negotiated with 22 pharmaceutical companies that presented 82 offers and equates to savings of $22 million.
The communication from the council of health ministries that represented the region added that, “the 15 medicines will be purchased by the health and social security systems of these eight countries in 2011”, according to Laprensagrafica.com.
The region will jointly negotiate a new purchase of 28 medicines on April.
Sica also reported that the first joint purchase of medicines by Central American countries, conducted couple of months ago, carried savings of $16.7 million.
Central America and the Dominican Republic are negotiating together the purchase of medicines from international laboratories.
In this first encounter, they are negotiating 5 drugs, out of a total 36 that will be purchased in the next months.
These drugs have "only one manufacturer in the world", so they don't compete with local laboratories.
Rolando Hernández is the executive secretary for the Ministry Council of Central America and Dominican Republic. He was quoted as saying: "the countries are looking to get better market prices and save money. Such savings would be invested in expanding and improving domestic health systems".
