The company Enterprise Rent-A-Car has announced it will be investing $12 million in the purchase of 500 vehicles to begin providing a car hire service in the country.
Enterprise Rent-A-Car, through the ANC Group, which operates the franchises Alamo Rent a Car and National Car Rental, will provide a car rental service initially in five strategic points: Liberia, Belen, Lindora, and Juan Santamaría and Daniel Oduber airports.
Around 10,000 vehicles are used by 28 companies engaged in car rental in Panama, a business which generates about $77 million a year.
Between international and local franchises, the vast majority of companies engaged in the car rental business are established in the capital and state that their customers are 50% foreigners visiting the country for tourism and 50% nationals. Car rental prices range from $15 per day and the requirements are minimal due to the demand in the market.
The agency is currently spending $1 million a month on hiring garbage trucks.
Mismanagement of the trucks has led the authority to abandon the option of having its own fleet of vehicles, opting for rental instead.
For the next 12 months the institution plans to spend $16.8 million on rental payments, which is currently distributed between about 7 companies at a rate of $65 per hour.

The study "Perceptions of Costa Rican Tourism Entrepreneurs on the Effects of the Economic Crisis on the Tourism Industry" conducted by the National Chamber of Tourism shows that 71.2% of the entrepreneurs in the sector who in March had projected a decrease in reservations for Easter Week with respect to 2008, only 51.7% still believe that reservations were lower."
Alamo and Hertz experienced 20% and 6% growth respectively in car rentals.
The increase in rentals in the first quarter when compared with the same period in 2008 indicates that the rental companies have not felt the crisis.
The article in Prensa.com reported statements by companies in the sector where Gloria de Vallarino from Hertz said that although they have experienced an increase in rentals in the first quarter over the same period in 2008, the foreign tourist market decreased by 9%.
The Panamanian car rental market has been growing, and has enough space for big international franchises as well as local small businesses.
The analysis of the sector by Raul Carrillo on laestrella.com.pa shows that operators continue to be optimistic in 2009, despite the global crisis: "We want to change the perception that we have to be the most expensive car rental in the country, said the manager of HertzPanama, Gloria Elisa Vallarino. And for that, Hertz has flete of cars that is 90% Nissan and 10% BMW, for the more demanding clients."
