An environmental impact study has been presented in Panama to design and build a hospital in Puerto Armuelles, Chiriquí province.
Data from the Interactive System "Construction in Central America", compiled by the Business Intelligence Unit at CentralAmericaData, indicates that in April the Social Security Fund submitted an Environmental Impact Study (EIS) to the Ministry of the Environment.
A request has been made to cancel the tender for laboratory supplies for the Social Security Fund of Panama, as it is considered to be a "nontransparent" act.
The company, specializing in medical and hospital equipment, Horacio Icaza y Cia, S.A., has declared that the public act of tender No.06-215 was "not very transparent" and that contracts were awarded to companies that did not meet the legal framework and the specifications and under edict, obviating the recommendations of an evaluation committee.
Contracts have been awarded in Panama of contracts for the supply, storage, transportation and delivery of materials and medical supplies for the Social Security Department.
Of the 59 products tendered only 54 were awarded to the companies Terapias Avanzadas S.A., Medline Solutions Panama Inc., Alta Tecnología Médica S.A., Alpha Mediq S.A., Kendall S.A., Hospimédica Panamá S.A., Compañía Astor S.A., 3M Panamá, U.S.
A bill aims to increase fuel tax by five cents to finance the projected increase granted to pensioners and retirees of the Social Security Department.
The project submitted to the National Assembly, seeks to collect $0.05 per per liter of fuel with the goal of raising $100 million a year to fund, with $80 million, a raise for retirees and with $20 million a Program for Disability, Aging and Death (IVM by its initials in Spanish).
The Social Security Department has announced a new call for the purchase of 60 types of drugs for $6.6 million which will be held on July 15.

The Social Security Department (CSS) explained that, contrary to what is stated in a newspaper from the city, the purchase of supplies for the treatment of HIV and cancer was never suspended, what was suspended was one specific purchase, out of the many carried out in order to keep the institution supplied with these drugs The CSS will fulfill its responsibility to provide medicines to patients who require them through decentralized procurement as has been done up to now.

Expectations are for an increase in domestic consumption driven by economic growth which will boost the sector to grow by more than 5% during 2013.
"According to the Comptroller General of the Republic, the behavior of the manufacturing industry, observed through its integrated indices of volume, price and value, showed that for January-December 2012, compared to the same period last year, there were increases in the order of 4.7%, 6.9% and 11.9%, respectively. Foods and beverages, and the manufacture of building materials were the most dynamic and at the same time rose the most in price and value," noted an article in Capital.com.pa.
