ICE, Costa Rica's electricity company, will offer energy surpluses to Panamanian distribution company ETESA.
Costa Rica is now able to sell any electric energy surpluses to Panama, after the Panamanian government enacted a law modifying the country's electric market, and entrusting ETESA the purchase of domestic and foreign energy.
ICE's wholesale commercialization director, Bolívar Esquivel Cascante, explained that "90% of the energy generated in the country comes from hydroelectric sources, and 10% from thermal stations. ICE can sell energy to Panama when it has surpluses. In some periods of the year we'll have hydro surpluses that we'll offer to Panama, but we might also offer thermal energy, when these stations are not used, specially in the rainy season".
