The Economic Situation Report at the end of the first quarter of 2011 states: Economic growth is still slow and fragile.
The global economic recovery continues, although there are still some weaknesses in the international financial condition. A 4.4% expansion is projected for 2011. However, this recovery is uneven across countries: while the developed economies are could reach 2.5% growth, in emerging and developing countries the expansion could be 6%.
Corn shortage is adding to the already existing shortage of bean. Escalating international prices are threatening millions of poor Central Americans.
January global data shows that food prices continue to rise and are already surpassing the 2008 prices.
And while the Central American economies are benefiting in part by the increase, for example by increasing revenues from coffee and sugar exports, they have not secured supply of basic traditional consumer products such as wheat, corn and beans; the basic foods of poor population. The already high prices are worsened by poor harvests due to bad weather.
The 15th State of the Nation Report warns on rising crime, larger income disparity and misuse of natural resources.

Sugar production in the southeast of Brazil has fallen almost 11 percent in this year's harvest, while at the same time ethanol production grew by 6.15 percent.
According to the Union of the Sugar Cane Industry, the data reported on June 1 has confirmed that the harvest is more favorable to ethanol, a fule heavily used in Brazilian automobiles.
