For the third quarter of 2021, rice imports made by Central America showed a decrease of 31%, however, the main supplier of the region was the United States of America with $139 million, which represents 68% of the purchases made from Central America.

For the first half of 2021, rice imports in the region decreased by 30%, representing a purchase value of $143 million in that period, the main supplier was the United States with $100 million in sales.

After five consecutive months of increases, the index of food prices fell slightly in July, reflecting a reduction in the prices of cereals and vegetable oils.

4 August 2016, Rome –The international prices for majorfood commoditiessaw a modest decline in July, following five consecutive months of increases. The FAO Food Price Index (FPI) averaged 161.9 points in July 2016, slipping 0.8 percent (1.3 points) below its level in June and 1.4 percent below its level of July 2015.The overall decline of the Index was largely caused by drops in international quotations of grains and vegetable oils, more than offsetting firmer dairy, meat and sugar prices.

Coffee: Coffee futures price in February fell by 0.8 from the previous month, standing at 116.4 cents per pound. Similarly, the price was lower by 25.1% in annual terms.
From 2016 grain importers will go from paying the current 40% import tariff to 36% in 2016 and it will continue to decline until it reaches 0% in 2023.
The rice producing sector in El Salvador is trying to prepare for the start of the process of tariff elimination on imports of the grain, which already next year will be reduced by 4% from the current rate.
From January 2016 import tariffs will start to be phased out on chicken, rice and milk from the USA, reaching 0% in 2022 and 2025, under the DR-CAFTA agreement.
In Costa Rica local producers say they have been preparing for this for several years, but the country's loss of competitiveness due to high production costs and lack of action by the government to improve on this might prevent them from competing on equal terms.
In Honduras the Rice Producers Association is negotiating with the government conditions for establishing a reference price and proposing fixing at $18.65 per hundredweight.

The Iraqi state-owned grain company issued on Monday an international tender to buy at least 30,000 tons of rice, as stated by the Ministry of Commerce.
In Costa Rica a quota for 17,000 tons of rice imported from the US has been rejected, due to the alleged presence of pesticide residues.

Now official: Thailand is the largest exporter of rice
With more than 10 million tons of rice, Thailand was the largest rice exporter in 2014. After India held the lead for two years, Thailand this year will be the most important country in terms of rice exports.
Calculations by associations of rice farmers in Panama indicate that the total hectares planted this year is less than 40,000, well below the 76,000 that was grown between 1999 and 2001.
