The creation of a $55 million trust fund has been announced to buy drugs for the hospital network in the country along with the preparation of tender documents.
Of the total, $18.4 million will be provided by the Honduran Institute of Social Security and $8.3 million will come from the University Teaching Hospital's budget for the purchase of drugs for chronic diseases.
From August 20th to 22nd the Ministries of Health will be jointly negotiating the purchase of international pharmaceutical drugs.
Medicines for the treatment of diabetes and cancer, kidney transplant processes, anticonvulsants, cardiovascular conditions and contraceptives are part of the products to be purchased by governments jointly in order to achieve better prices "... compared to other providers in the region."
The supervisory committee of the Honduran Institute of Social Security has announced that it is preparing the purchase of medicines for patients with chronic diseases.
Germán Leitzelar, from the oversight committee at the Honduran Institute of Social Security, told Laprensa.hn that "... 'hopefully by the end of August we will be receiving the drugs.'"
The government has announced the implementation of a control system for medicine purchases which would provide information on prices and suppliers of medicines purchased by the State.

Tegucigalpa. In order to decrease manipulation of bids and irregularities in the procurement of medicines that are awarded by public sector competitive tenders, today sees the launch of the interactive platform "open medicines".
Joint price negotiations for the purchase of medicines has led to better management of the budget of the Ministries of Health in countries in the region.
Since 2010 the Council of Ministers of Health of Central America and the Dominican Republic (COMISCA) has been negotiating the price and then each country makes its purchase from pharmaceutical manufacturers.
