For the third quarter of 2021, the value of sales in the Central American region reached $825 million, with the main buyer being the United States of America with $427 million, representing 52% of exports.

Because the Asian giant is the world's largest buyer of fresh fruit and people are willing to consume new and tropical foods, the region's pineapple producers have the opportunity to increase their business with the Chinese market.
According to a study conducted by the Foreign Trade Promoter (Procomer), China remains one of the largest producers of fruit in the world, but quality remains a problem, so they are interested in imported fruit, added to consumers looking for better quality products as part of the search for a healthier lifestyle.
In the first six months of 2019, Central American countries exported pineapple for $525 million, and sales to companies in the United Kingdom grew by 5% over the same period in 2018.

In the first three months of 2019, Central American countries exported $251 million worth of pineapple, and sales to Spanish companies increased 12% over the same period in 2018.

Last year, the main regional crop sold abroad was coffee, with $2.671 million, followed by banana, with $2.594 million, pineapple, with $1.097 million and sugar, with $722 million.

During the first nine months of 2018, the main regional crop exported was coffee, with $2,493 million, followed by banana, with $1,939 million, pineapple, with $825 million and sugar, with $645 million.

In the first half of the year, Central American countries exported pineapple for $583 million, 14% more than in the same period in 2017, mainly because of sales to U.S. companies.

In the first quarter of the year, countries in the region exported $261 million worth of pineapples, 18% more than in the same period in 2017, mainly explained by sales to the United States and the Netherlands.

Last year the region exported more than $1 billion worth of pineapples abroad, 8% more than in 2016, and 50% of exports went to the United States.

Between January and June 2017 the region exported $514 million worth of pineapples, 8% more than was sold during the same period in 2016.

The Asian country is projecting increasing imports of pineapples at an annual rate of 31% between 2017 and 2021.
A study prepared by Procomer of Costa Rica points out the opportunities presented by the Chinese market for the export of pineapples from Central America, as well as the requirements and permits that must be completed in order to enter the Asian market.
Led by Costa Rica, in 2016 the value of pineapple exports amounted to $954 million, equivalent in volume to 2 million tons, 6% more than was sold in 2015.

In 2015 Costa Rica continued to lead the export of fresh and dried pineapples with $822 million, followed by Honduras, with $26 million and Panama, with $22 million.
Figureson the Pineapple market in CentralAmerica, compiled by the Business Intelligence Unit at CentralAmericaData.com, show that in 2015 the countries of Central America exported a combined total of 2 million 13 thousand tons of fresh or dried pineapple, equivalent in value to $871 million.
Responding to the growing demand for the variety because of its sweet taste and longer shelf life, Malaysia has announced that in 2016 it will increase by 70% its production of MD2.
