The protests which since the beginning of the year have been held by workers in the Cobre Panama project in Colón have paralyzed work on the power line and the 300 MW thermoelectric plant.
The labor dispute that has prevented the project from progressing arose after both parties, the workers' union and the company Minera Panamá, accused each other of not complying with some points of the agreement made between them in January, with intermediation on the part of the Ministry of Labor.
Mining activities have grown at an annual average of 9% in the last ten years, mainly due to growing foreign investment, an increase in production and favorable international prices.
A report presented by the Nicaraguan Mining Chamber states that between 2006 and 2016, foreign direct investment totaled $793 million, having an annual average of $79 million.
Metallic and non-metallic mining projects granted in concession cover 8.4% of the country's land area, but less than 1% are in operation.

The decision taken by the Guatemalan Constitutional Court confirming the suspension of La Puya mining project "violates the certainty and security of investments made in the country."

The Canadian mining company GoldCorp has agreed to sell 100% of its stake in the gold and silver mining project Cerro Blanco located in Asuncion Mita, Jutiapa, to Bluestone Resources.

The Mining Chamber of Nicaragua projects growth of 5% in exports this year compared to 2015, driven by a rebound in gold prices internationally and investments in the sector.Sergio Rios, director of the union, also attributed the positive growth projection to the approximate 5% achieved in production.

Less mining of metals such as silver, lead, zinc and iron oxide explains the 17% drop in mining activities in the first quarter, compared to the last quarter.
In the quarterly GDP report up to March 2016 the Central Bank states that"...The negative result in Mining and Quarrying (-17.0%) was associated with a decline in metal ore mining (silver, lead, zinc and iron oxide), which has been discouraged by low prices in the international market, which do not stimulate the development of projects aimed at exploring new mineral deposits. "
The launch of an online approval system for mineral export inspection has been announced.

The II International Mining Congress is being organized by the Mining Chamber of Nicaragua and will be held on August 16 and 17 in Managua.

Central America should take note that the Canadian government is moving away from environmental positions and promoting and defending the interests of its mining investment undertakings in other territories.
The Salvadoran government is attempting to gain support in Canada in its litigation against Oceana Gold, a company founded on Australian and Canadian capital which is trying to buy Pacific Rim, a company that sued El Salvador for $301 million because they were not granted permission to operate a gold mine in the north.
Businessmen are complaining that there are over one hundred applications for licenses which have been approved by the Attorney but are pending review and approval by the Ministry of Energy and Mines.

The concessionaire B2Gold expects to invest $44 million this year in the La Libertad, Santo Domingo and El Limón mines, while HEMCO SA plans to spend $14 million on the operation of the Bonanza mine.
