In Costa Rica, Thermo Fisher Scientific opened a new 1,400 square meter distribution center in Coyol Free Zone, Alajuela.
This investment represents the third expansion of the company in the country in 7 years, and with its new distribution center Thermo Fisher increased its installed capacity by 52%, reported the Costa Rican Coalition of Development Initiatives.
The medical device manufacturer Precision Concepts Medical Technologies will invest $5 million in the construction and operation of a new plant in Costa Rica.

In the next five years the Costa Rican Social Security Institution plans to invest about $1.8 billion in building new infrastructure and purchase of medical equipment.
The aim of the Costa Rican Social Security Fund (CCSS) is to start to reverse the significant backlog there is in terms of building infrastructure, due to the decline in investment registered with the entity from about 2010.
$18 million will be allocated to equip the seven-story tower, which will be built starting from April at the Calderon Guardia hospital, with 209 beds, 35 incubators and radiology, neonatology, gynecology, and an isolation unit.
The estimated cost of the project is $83 million, its construction will begin in mid-April and it will be completed within three years, according to the Costa Rican Social Security Fund (CCSS).
In 2016 the export of cosmetic, dental, cardiovascular, and endoscopy goods and others generated revenues of $2.556 billion, equivalent to 26% of the total exported by the country.
The export value of manufactured medical and precision equipment exceeded $2.5 billion, almost matching exports reported by the agricultural sector, which totaled $2.69 billion last year.

Two US investment funds will be investing in the Costa Rican company Establishment Labs, a manufacturer of breast implants.

The purchase by the German company of the assets of Conceptus include a Patent for an intertubal contraceptive device which will go into production at the Metropolitan Free Zone in Heredia.
Bayer announced that the plant will be producing a new permanent birth control device. The first stage of the plant has been in operation since October 2014, dedicated to assembly and other tasks in the manufacturing process, but the product has not yet been marketed or exported because it is now in the certification stage.
There are 46 companies in Costa Rica in the medical industry whose exports in the first 10 months of 2012 totaled $1.24 billion.

The medical devices company will close a facility in Florida, U.S., and move it to Costa Rica.
This plant, located in the city of Doral, produces parts for stents used in treatment of heart disease, and employs 1.400 people. Boston Scientific expects to definitively close the facility in 2013.
