The volatility of international prices of products (gasoline and diesel) in the oil market persists, being the main factor affecting reference prices for fuels.It is worth noting that as final consumers we should be aware that the instability of oil prices andtheir fluctuations are permanent factors, making assertions and predictions about future prices unpredictable, however in the current fortnight trends in international prices have been caused by the following events:
Price of gallon of regular gasoline: Costa Rica $3.79, Nicaragua $3.51, Honduras $3.47, Guatemala $2.96, El Salvador $2.90 y Panamá $2.77.

Fuel prices in Central America, in the current fortnight, have gone up, having been directly affected by a recent recovery in international prices of oil derivatives, which has once again become a determining factor and one that is difficult to predict (ups and downs); Similarly, the rise in prices is largely dependent on compliance with the agreement on reducing world production taken by the OPEC in the first quarter of 2017 and expectations that revolve around the next meeting of that body, also having an effect is the increase in Chinese crude imports, which have helped reduce supply relative to demand.

Variations in current reference prices of liquid fuels are being pushed upwards due to the usual volatility in international prices of oil and its derivatives, which this week have fluctuated due to uncertainty caused by the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and producers outside of the group, having informal talks in Algeria during the International Energy Forum; also a surprise decline in US inventories, in light of a record drop in imports into the US Gulf of Mexico, which led to a fall in inventories to the lowest level since records began in 1990, due to the passage of tropical storm Hermine, which last week threatened activities in the Gulf of Mexico before moving to the eastern United States, an event which resulted in a drop of the country's oil production and a drop in imports, causing further increases in fuel prices in the region.

In recent weeks, international oil prices have been volatile as per usual; however, a downward trend will benefit the pockets of Salvadorans as the current reference prices for liquid fuels have reductions of up - $0.05, this is due to excess inventories (over abundance of stored reserves of crude oil and especially its derivatives) and speculation about the balance between supply and demand, and a view towards the next"informal" meeting to be held by the OPEC in September.
