From a statement issued by the Government of Guatemala:
The handmade crafts sector, made up of 70 percent female workers, is seeking to increase exports to major international markets, where they are recognized for their creativity.
Handicrafts exports have proved to be a good deal for small businesses.
Promoting the brand of Nicaragua, the main products exported are handmade ceramics, furniture, hammocks, textiles and marble stone, said the president of Grupo Raíces, Silvia Torrez.
Torrez explained in an article in Laprensa.com.ni that, "the main challenges facing the sector are to stay in the markets, because there must be communication, experience and to keep on the lookout for buyers and sometimes complying with them becomes a problem and that should not be, because we should all work in an articulated, organized way."
With an average annual growth of 5%, Guatemalan handcrafts have increased their presence in international fairs in Orlando, Germany and New York.
Support for the sector in the form of strategic actions by the Crafts Committee at Agexport is bearing fruits with sustained increases in productivity and exports, which in 2011 reached $53 million.
Also factoring in the success is the involvement of these artisans in international fairs, and their skills in design and management.
Sectors such as handicrafts expect to do business at a two-day event, called New World Craft.
Besides this event, the Guatemalan Association of Exporters (Agexport) is organizing for its members to take part in the Service Summit convention, where sectors such as call centers, digital content development, sustainable tourism and health, among others, estimate business of $25 million will be done.
Called Microfer, it will be a permanent Trade Fair Park in Nicaragua for 1.500 SMEs to showcase their products.
Inpyme, Nicaragua’s institute for Small And Medium Enterprises had previously announced that the project would be constructed in 2010.
“The design of the park is not yet known, although back in 2007, Inpyme authorities announced it would feature an amphitheater, administrative offices, and stands form micro, small and medium businesses”, explained Elnuevodiario.com.ni.
The trade show will take place on September 8 and 9 in Casa Santo Domingo, Antigua Guatemala.
NEW WORLD CRAFTS is an event covering the crafts, gifts and decoration industry of Guatemala and Central America.
“Lucrecia de Gonzalez, president of the organizing committee, explained they have already sold 80% of the fair’s stands, and expect over 90 buyers from around the globe”, reported Sigloxxi.com.
Agexport, Guatemala's export promotion agency, will hold several trade shows, expos and congresses in August and September.
Expomueble XXII will be held from August 4th to 9th, and it will be followed by the Recycling Expo Conference, the 10th and 11th of the same month.
A month later, from September 9 to 10, they will host the III National Congress for the Development and Application of Plastics in Agriculture, and later the same month, from the 10 to the 12, a software and services fair, known as Services Summit, will take place. The last event of the month will be the crafts fair "New World Crafts", to be held the 29th and 30th.
The fair, which brings together artisans from the region, will be held on September 29 and 30, in Antigua City.
