For the third quarter of 2021, purchases in the Central American region of beauty and personal care products increased by 28% to reach $413 million, with Mexico being the main supplier of these products with a sales value of $123 million.

From January to July 2020, Central American companies imported perfumes and toilet water for $17 million from Mexico, 40% less than in the same period in 2019, mainly due to the decrease in purchases from Guatemala and El Salvador.

From January to March of this year, the countries of the region imported $77 million in diapers and similar items, 2% more than in the same period in 2019, with Guatemala, Nicaragua and Costa Rica being the markets that increased their purchases the most.

In the first nine months of 2019, companies in the region imported $374 million in beauty and personal care items, 5% more than reported for the same period in 2018.

60% of the beauty and personal care products offered on the island are imported, which added to the intense tourist activity that takes place in the country, lays the foundation for many opportunities in this business.
Jamaica, which has hotel and beach spa infrastructure, attracts nearly 4.5 million visitors each year, who purchase different types of items, among which are personal care products, according to a report by the Costa Rican Foreign Trade Promotion Agency.
Between January and September 2018, companies in the region imported $358 million in beauty and personal care items, and purchases from companies in Spain grew 21% over the same period in 2017.

In the first six months of the year, Central American companies imported $239 million in beauty and personal care items, and imports from Colombia increased 5% over the same period in 2017.

In the first three months of the year, Central American countries imported $116 million worth of beauty and personal care items, and $52 million were purchased by companies in Guatemala and Costa Rica.

Last year imports of beauty and personal care products in Central America amounted to $489 million, representing a 2% increase with respect to 2016.

Between January and September 2017, Central American companies imported $362 million worth of beauty and personal care products, and Costa Rica and Guatemala accounted for 44% of purchases.

From January to November 2017, countries in the region imported $105 million worth of beauty and personal hygiene products from Mexico, and 57% was purchased by companies in Guatemala and Costa Rica.

Between 2012 and 2016 imports of cosmetic products for spas and beauty centers in the North American grew by 12%, surpassing $3.5 billion.

Globally, the beauty and personal care industry is dominated by multinationals such as Coty Inc., Estee Lauder, L'Oreal Group, and Procter and Gamble, which are examples of companies that control the global management of major brands such as MAC makeup, Cover Girl, the Body Shop, Clarins, Clairol, among others.
Between 2015 and 2016, the value of diapers and similar items imported into countries in the region fell slightly, going from $289 million in 2015 to $285 million in 2016.

In 2016, Central American countries imported $477 million worth of beauty and personal hygiene articles, and 60% came from Mexico, the United States and Colombia.
