The government decreed that starting January 1, 2020, banana exporters in Costa Rica will pay local producers a minimum price of $8.36 per 18.14 kilo box.
The authorized increase will be $0.67 per box of 18.14 kilos, from $7.69 to $8.36 for each package sold abroad, reported the Ministry of Economy, Industry and Commerce (MEIC).
In the first three months of 2019, Central American countries recorded $590 million in banana sales abroad, 6% less than reported in the same period of 2018.

After the presence of the pest Fusarium R4T in Colombia was confirmed, in Costa Rica the producers' guild asked the authorities to decree a national state of emergency to prevent the entry of the disease into the country.

In the first three months of the year, Central American countries registered $625 million in banana sales abroad, and exports to the Netherlands increased by 38% compared to the same period in 2017.

Due to the effect of climatic phenomena at the beginning of the year, in the first five months of 2018, banana sales abroad amounted to $410 million, 9% less than was reported in the same period in 2017.
According to data from the Foreign Trade Promotion Office (Procomer), a comparison between the period between January and May 2017 and the same in 2018 shows that the value of banana sales abroad fell by 9%, going from $448 million to $410 million.
In the first nine months of 2017, Costa Rica exported $784 million worth of fresh and dried bananas, 7% more than in the same period in 2016.

This year, Peruvian banana producers plan to export more than 10,400 fruit containers, which represents a 25% increase compared to 2016.
The main markets for Peruvian bananas are the United States, Germany, Holland, Belgium, Russia and Japan, among others. In addition, Peruvian bananas are entering more markets in Asia, especially in China and Taiwan.
In 2016 the countries in the region exported $2,393 million worth of bananas, and 78% of them went to the United States, the Netherlands and Italy.

In 2016 a record 120 million boxes of 18 kilos were exported, generating revenues of $986 million, and productivity rose from 2,339 boxes per hectare in 2015 to 2,800 last year.
2016 was a good year for the banana sector in Costa Rica, which registered a significant rise compared to results seen in previous years.Compared to 2015 not only did overall productivity improve, but sales grew in value and volume.
Costa Rica's share in the market for bananas imported by the European Union increased from 13.7% in 2009 to 15.2% in 2015.
The main reason behind the increase is the reduction of tariffs on bananas from Latin America, which fell from 176 euros per ton to 103 euros.
