The government has announced the signing of an agreement to set up an office to promote trade and investment on the Asian island.
From a statement issued by the Ministry of Economy of Guatemala:
"In order to have an active and permanent business presence in Hong Kong, the Minister of Economy, Sergio de la Torre, signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Chairman of the South-South Steering Committee for Sustainable Development SS-SCSD, Cai E'Sheng, through which the Guatemalan Office for Trade and Investment will be created in Hong Kong.
The measure adopted by the government of Guatemala is part of an investigation into dumping on imports of zinc sheets from China.
From March 17 all steel import operations from China must be reported to the Ministry of Economy using an electronic form.
"Sergio de la Torre, Minister of Economy, said that based on this information a data traceability procedure will be performed concerning the costs of importing and marketing of the sheets, both in China and Guatemala."
Russian businessmen will visit the country in January under the agreement signed to promote investment between the two governments.
The visit to Guatemala by Russian investors and the firm in November as part of the Agreement for the Promotion and Reciprocal Protection of Investments (APPRI by its initials in Spanish) represents a great opportunity for the industrial sector of the Central American country.
With the signing of an agreement for the promotion and protection of investments it is expected there will be an increase in trade and investment between the two countries.
The agreement was signed by the Minister of Economy of Guatemala, Sergio de la Torre and Alexei Likhachev, Deputy Minister of Economic Development in Russia.

In order to minimize the time it takes to register a company in the country, the Ministry of Economy (Mineco) has launched the new website "MiNegocio.gt", in order to make the process transparent .
Taking part in the business roundtables were 74 Guatemalan businessmen living in the U.S. and 200 local companies.
Sergio de la Torre, the Minister of Economy, said during the activity there were 1500 business meetings, and that the food sector was the biggest beneficiary.

During business meetings in Guatemala, the Spanish groups Gran Solar and Ortiz announced investments of $ 110 million in solar plants.
Since yesterday, a Spanish trade mission led by Spanish Secretary of State for Trade has been holding business meetings with Guatemalan businessmen.
Prensalibre.com reports that "Grupo Gran Solar and Grupo Ortiz announced yesterday that they will build solar power plants of 5 MW and 50 MW respectively, with an investment of nearly $110 million."
In a meeting between migrants and local entrepreneurs productive investment of a portion of remittances reaching Guatemala will be encouraged.
In 2011, remittances to their families by Guatemalans living abroad, mainly in the U.S., totaled $4.37 billion.
An article in S21.com.gt reports that "The Government of Guatemala announced today its first meeting with Guatemalan immigrants in the United States to support productive projects through remittances from relatives in the country. The Guatemalan Minister of Economy, Sergio de la Torre, said at a press conference that the meeting will be held on 10 and 11 December in Guatemala. "
A trade mission of twenty Spanish companies will arrive in December seeking business and investment opportunities.
Between 3 and Dec. 5 Spanish businessmen, representatives from the sectors of clothing and textiles, food processing, outsourcing services, electricity and infrastructure will hold meetings with their Guatemalan counterparts.
Sergio de la Torre, Minister of Economy of Guatemala noted the interest of the company Inditex (Zara, Pull & Bear, Bershka, Oysho and Massimo Dutti), in expanding their investments in the country.
