A strike has been announced in the next few days unless the government meets demands related to the problems faced in customs offices and compliance with traffic rules.
Spokespeople for the Transport Association in Nicaragua (ATN) said the strike is in protest against the bureaucratic obstacles faced in customs offices, arrests by the police in different points along the routes and the increase in the fines.
Albalinisa has been accused of apparently having more rights than others in using services at the port.
Business owners are complaining that "... 'Albalinisa always has priority, and drivers or carriers, even though they have their documentation ready, have to wait until they process the cargo of that company first', explained Marvin Altamirano, president of the Shipping Association of Nicaragua to Trincheraonline.com.
In contrast to what should be a regional customs union, every Central American border post charges vastly different rates and taxes.
"We believe that we could even stage regional custom blockades," said the Nicaraguan Marvin Altamirano, president of the American Federation of Chambers of Transportation (Fecatrans).
Central Freight carriers will meet next August to define the measures to be taken against the different fees imposed by various countries in the region.
