Between July and October 2020, the number of people in Guatemala exploring options for life insurance online increased by 3%, and the number of Panamanian consumers seeking auto insurance increased by 39%.

Last year, total income from insurance premiums in Costa Rica accumulated $ 1,449 million, 8% more than reported in the previous year, a variation that doubles the 3.5% increase recorded between 2017 and 2018.
The 8% growth recorded in 2019 doubles the variation recorded in 2018, when the upturn amounted to 4%. According to the Superintendencia General de Seguros (SUGESE), the dynamism of the sector's sales represents not only a significant increase in the market, but also one that has been sustained over the last 11 years.
Explained by the behavior of the Costa Rican market, in 2017 Central American insurers received $5.02 billion in premiums, 7% more than in 2016.
According to a report drawn up by Revista Desempeño Asegurador, in 2017 "... insurance sales in the region expressed an absolute increase of US $334.7 million, an amount that represented a rise of 7.1% compared to sales in 2016."
Projections are that this year growth of the Central American insurance sector will be driven by activities in the markets of Costa Rica and Guatemala.

Explained in part by the increase registered in mandatory insurance, last year income from premiums in Costa Rica added up to $1.323 billion, 15% more than in 2016.
Costa Rican authorities reported that last year the largest increase was recorded in mandatory types of insurance, with interannual increases of 26% (¢28.4 billion) in Occupational Hazards and 18% (¢7.5 billion) in the Obligatory Automotive.As a result, this category gained a 1.9 pp share with respect to voluntary insurance categories.
Annual average per capita expenditure on compulsory and voluntary insurance policies grew from $140 in 2009 to $246 in 2016, approaching the Latin American average, which stands at $250.
In addition to an increase in the supply of insurance that came after the end of the market monopoly in 2008, insurers and authorities at the Superintendency also attribute the increase in spending to regulation of the "gray market" which existed before the opening."...These were policies that were sold illegally during the monopoly and were concentrated in health insurance sector."
Voluntary insurance made up the main component of growth compared to 2015, with a consequent reduction in the share of compulsory insurance.

In 2016, revenues from insurance premiums grew by ¢90.7 billion (16%) compared to 2015, closing the year at ¢655 billion.Growth was widespread by category and in all cases, higher than the main macroeconomic indicators.
According to Fitch Ratings growth in the insurance sector in Central America in 2017 will be driven by the markets of Costa Rica and Nicaragua.

The existence of 26 active brokerage companies confirms the confidence that this marketing channel continues to earn in the insurance market.
Since the opening up of the Costa Rican insurance market in 2010, momentum has gained in the activity of insurance brokers, going from one single company to 26 companies. Added to this are two entities with conditional authorization given by the Superintendent of Insurance (SUG): Innova Sociedad Corredora de Seguros and Akros Corredores de Seguros, while another two have recently filed applications, and are in the stage of reviewing regulatory documents, according Elfinancierocr.com.
In Costa Rica insurance companies are seeking to increase sales of policies to SMEs and take advantage of a hitherto untapped market.
Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) represent 77% of businesses in the country, and therefore insurers are seeking to enter this market niche which has not been fully exploited. There are currently 5 companies that have focused on this market segment, but it is expected in 2015 one more will be added offering health insurance, and life insurance and workplace accident policies, among others.
Between January and September revenue from sales of these policies increased by 74% compared to the same period in 2013, with the sale of group insurance policies to companies being the factor driving the growth.
According to data from the Superintendent of Insurance, in January-September, the sector as a whole has accumulated $116 million in premiums for such policies.
Growth projections for 2020 in premium income are of 135% for Costa Rica, and 97% for the rest of the region.
A report entitled "Performance of Costa Rican Insurers in the Central American Environment" states that Costa Rica has a higher growth potential given it has "... less dependence on reinsurance, which involves greater risk retention, which allows for larger reserves, more investment and financial returns. "
US insurer BlueCross BlueShield, has announced the opening of its operations in the country, which will be part of the Puerto Rican Triple-S Group.

Five years after the opening up of the market, there have been 500 new products and some prices have dropped by up to 40%, but penetration is still low.
In an interview with María Morales from Markets & Trends undertaken with the Superintendent of Insurance in Costa Rica, Tomas Soley, the official explained that the opening of the market has led competitors to offer more value added products.
