US insurer BlueCross BlueShield, has announced the opening of its operations in the country, which will be part of the Puerto Rican Triple-S Group.

Insurer arrives in the country with plans for complementary health

Auto policies are the fastest growing category, with an increase of 14% so far this year compared to 2013.
Lack of a culture of prevention is preventing the emerging Nicaraguan insurance market from achieving high growth rates in most policies. Car policies are the most sought after, but those for life, property and health are growing slowly.
"... In 2013, the insurance industry paid $40 million in personal insurance, which included life insurance, accident and health insurance and pension income; also in property insurance including car insurance, fire and other policies, $105.2 million was paid."
The amount of premiums written during the first half of 2014 totaled $657 million, which is 12% more than in the same period in 2013.
Of the total of premiums paid in the first six months of the year, health insurance, group life and car policies accounted for about 45%. In the case of auto insurance, one of the fastest growing in the country, the total was $112.4 million, 9.78% more than in the first half of 2013.
The Panama Tourism Authority reports that the contract with which it provided free medical insurance for tourists ended on June 30.
From now on if visitors in Panama want to have coverage for medical emergencies they must take out their own insurance.

The Panama Tourism Authority wishes to communicate to visitors that are in the national territory and those having Panama as their destination, that the insurance contract for tourists expired on June 30, 2014 and is therefore terminated.
An agreement has been made to grant an extension until the end of the contract year on medical insurance policies for tourists, while a tender is prepared to award the system from January 2015.
The extension of the contract with the insurer Generali, which has provided the service since 2011, will be until December, while a tender is prepared to select the new insurance provider from 2015.
In the first five months of the year the volume of premiums was $545 million, nearly $50 million more than in the same period in 2013.
Automobiles, with premiums of $94 million and Health, with premiums of $91.8 million, are the sectors that grew the most compared to the previous period, with increases of 9.83% and 17%, respectively.

The state run Nacional de Seguros and PanAmerican Life share 88% of the market in the segment of accident and health policies.
The segment for Accident and Health policies showed that up to March 2014 the majority market share was held by Instituto Nacional de Seguros (INS) with 46.4% and 41.7% was held by Pan American Life, according to the Superintendent of Insurance (SUGESE).
Two years after the amendment to the Law of the sector, the insurance market covering risks for short periods at low costs has been consolidated.

Five years after the opening up of the market, there have been 500 new products and some prices have dropped by up to 40%, but penetration is still low.
