The U.S. market has once again become significant for the Guatemalan furniture and wood industry.
Until last June sales of furniture and forest products to the U.S. market represented 28% of total exports of the sector, by the end of 2013 sales are expected to exceed $100 million.
The opening of Expomueble shines a spotlight on the growing numbers of exports of furniture and wood products.
In the first half of 2012 exports from the sector totaled $43 million, confirming the trend that started 25 years in 1986 with overseas sales of just $3 million.
Exporters hope to do $8 million worth of business at the furniture fair which starts on Tuesday August 2.
Next month sees the start of the Expomuebleevent, which brings together the leading exporters of wood products in the country, where year after year important negotiations have been finalised.
