The National Institute of Electricity in Guatemala is putting out to tender a supply of hardware, insulators, control cables, metal poles and crosses for the Western system.
In Guatemala a tender is being launched for maintenance and improvement works on networks and electrical distribution lines in different areas of the country.
"The region still needs to install at least 7,000 MW by the end of the decade and make investments of between $12,000 million and $18,000 million."
While in Panama the energy supply needed to meet the demand of its growing economy falls short, to the north of the region, in Guatemala, there is surplus energy but generators are unable to sell it due to the lack of regulations governing the futures contracts and because the Siepac (Regional Electricity Transmission System) project is still does not working 100%.

In Guatemala an award of lots one and three has been made to Fersa and Transportista Eléctrica Centroamericana, respectively, for the works to expand the national grid.
The Ministry of Energy and Mines (MEM) has awarded four of the five lots which are included in the tender. The sections of the southwest, northwest and northeast of the country were awarded to Fersa SA, while the southeastern portion was awarded to Transportista Eléctrica de Centroamérica.. "... The offers submitted for Lot C were declared out of range, therefore the tender will be analyzed once again. "
Initially eight companies expressed interest in the tender comprising of five lots, but the Ministry of Energy and Mines only received five offers. It is expected that on Monday the contract will be awarded for the works to expand the national electricity transmission network of 230, 138 and 69 kilowatts.
With the operation of four new substations it is expected that by January 2015 the electricity service will cover 90% of the country.

On a working visit to the town of San Agustin, in the Department of El Progreso on Friday, the president led the opening ceremony of four substations in the Expansion Plan of the Transmission System Energy (PET).
Proyectos de Eficiencia Energética was selected in Guatemala to deliver services for improvements, extension and maintenance of the public lighting network in the municipality of Santa Catarina Pinula, department of Guatemala.
The Municipality of Santa Catarina awarded the work to Proyectos de Eficiencia Energética S.A., which will be responsible for expanding and improving the lighting system, replacing the bulbs with new ones with outputs of between 100 watts and 1000 watts.
As part of the problems related to the regional market's lack of regulation, Guatemala does not enable the flow of Mexican energy through its territory towards the south of the isthmus.

Electricity imported from Mexico has a lower cost than that produced in Guatemala, which would allow it to be re-sold -or sell the energy produced from plants installed in their territory- to the rest of Central America, with a profit, because up to now electricity toll rates for using the SIEPAC have not been determined.
