Since last October 15th, the electricity rates have reported an increase of 8% with respect to the prices of the previous quarter.
The General Superintendence of Electricity and Telecommunications (Siget) informed that among the variables that have influenced the energy price this quarter are a substantial decrease in rainfall last July and the first weeks of August, which affected the reservoir filling of hydroelectric plants, limiting generation based on this type of resource.
As of October 15, electricity rates will go down by 4.4% compared to the prices in the previous quarter.
The General Superintendence of Electricity and Telecommunications (Siget) announced that the new electricity tariffs will come into effect from October 15.
In a statement, the Siget explained that "...Thanks to increased generation of renewable energy and imports, prices that went into effect on October 15 will be 4.41% lower than those applied on July 15."
Two weeks from the closing date, only 11 applications have been received to install self-production energy systems in homes.
Some attribute the lack of interest to the cost of installing the panels, as the return on investment is in the medium term.
Laprensagrafica.com reports that "...The initiative for self producers of renewable energy emerged as part of the policy to diversify sources of electricity in the country which is being carried out by the National Energy Council (CNE by its initials in Spanish) and other bodies. The idea is that people can generate their own energy and sell their surplus to distributors, for which they reserved 1MW... that wasdistributed among the seven distribution companies in the country according to their users. "
Starting from April 15th a reduction of 16% in the rate will come into effect and it will remain unchanged until July 14th.
From a statement issued by the Presidency of El Salvador:
The Superintendency of Electricity and Telecommunications (SIGET) has released the schedule for electricity rates which will run from the 15 April to 14 July, in which there is a noteworthy a reduction of energy costs, of 15.90%.
It has been estimated that in the next six years more than 900 MW of additional power will be generated from renewable sources.
A study produced in conjunction with American Cooperation Agency (USAID) revealed that "... from this year until 2021 it is expected that generation capacity will grow by 145.7 MW in energ from hydropower sources, by 102 MW from geothermal sources and 380 MW using natural gas.
Businessmen have denounced the impossibility of signing contracts to buy power for terms larger than 12 months, because there is still no regional guidelines to regulate it.
There is no point having an electricity market if you cannot import power for periods longer than one year, this is what the industrial union in El Salvador is arguing, stating that "...
The Salvadoran energy distribution company CAESS is putting out to tender the supply of 270 MW for a period of 24 months in a first tranche and for 15 months in a second tranche.
The bidding rules are now on sale and bids will be accepted until June 29 so that the contract can be awarded between 16 and 20 March.
From a statement issued by Companía de Alumbrado Eléctrico de San Salvador (CAESS)
From April 15th to July 14th the average electricity tariff will be reduced by 20% due to the drop in oil prices and the diversification of the energy matrix.
From a statement issued by the Superintendency of Electricity and Telecommunications (Siget):
The Superintendency of Electricity and Telecommunications (SIGET) wishes to make known to the Salvadoran population that once again an important and significant reduction was recorded in the prices of electricity corresponding to the adjustment of electricity tariff schedule, which will apply from Wednesday April 15, 2015 and will be in effect until July 14 this year.
The National Energy Board has announced that it is preparing the conditions for a short-term tender of 100 MW of renewable energy.
Although they have not yet set the date of the bidding process, the National Energy Board and the Superintendent of Electricity are considering including in the same contract solar and wind energy.
Laprensagrafica.com reports that "...The new tender will be held after the award of about 94 MW of renewable energy ... which already has signed contracts.... with energy distribution companies. "
The consortium Quantum-GLU would be the winner of a long-term contract to supply 335 MW generated from a power plant that would be built by the company.
A statement from the National Energy Board reads:
The electricity distribution company DELSUR has made public the financial bids offered by two companies who submitted documents for the tender for 355 megawatts (MW) of power and associated energy, namely: Asocio Quantum-GLU and AES Fonseca Energía, who on October 1 submitted the information required to participate in the tender for the supply of power for 20 years.
Interested parties have until 31 October to submit the terms of the tendering procedure to the Superintendency of Electricity and Telecommunications.
According to the calendar of the Superintendency of Electricity and Telecommunications (SIGET) on January 9, 2014 the winner of the tender will be announced.
To date about 78 companies have purchased the bidding documents for the project to generate 15 megawatts from renewable resources.
A series of tenders are being prepared to replace expiring energy contracts which are equivalent to an output of 380 megawatts.
This was confirmed by Luis Mendez, chief of the General Superintendency of Electricity and Telecommunications (SIGET), who added that "right now they are in process, but we are going to beat the deadlines ...".
"We will probably put out additional tenders in the medium term and then, rest assured that we are seriously backing a joint investment," Mendez said.
More than 70 investors have acquired the rules for the tender aimed at generating energy on a small scale.
"So far we have registered over 70 projects, and this could mean we end up with double the amount of supply we would have had based on the projections of 15 MW. In the end this is going to open a gap enabling the entry of renewable energy into the mix," said Carlos Najera, head of Renewable Energy at Consejo Nacional de Energía (CNE).
Small scale power facilities will be allowed to bid in a tender to provide 15 MW of renewable energy.
The Superintendency of Electricity and Telecommunications (Siget), the National Energy Council (CNE) and electricity distribution companies announced the provisions and requirements for developers who generate up to 1,000 kW to connect to the network of distributors and deliver energy.
Under the new law, concessions for small-scale electricity generation projects must be approved by the Legislative Assembly of El Salvador.
The legislature approved on August 21 the Regulatory Act for granting concessions for electricity generation projects on a small scale (less than 5MW), which limits the maximum concession period to 50 years and requires that energy projects be approved by the Assembly.
