According to the vice president of the Chamber of Mines of Nicaragua, Denis Lanzas, gold became the main export of the Central American country, recording sales of $435.8 million.
This product shifted beef from the first place position, which reported revenue of $389.1 million and gold coffee which earned $349 million in exports.
Estimations for this year are that 300,000 troy ounces will be exported which equates to an increase of 16.5% compared to the amount sold in 2012.
The information was confirmed by Denis Lanzas, vice president of the Chamber of Mines of Nicaragua (Caminic). This year gold ranked as the number one export product, generating $362.16 million to date and replacing coffee which has generated revenues of $341.4 million.
Good prices on the international market and new mining investments could result in gold being the Nicaragua’s flagship product in 2013.
During 2012 110,000 ounces of gold were extracted, and in 2013 the figure could rise to 130,000 ounces.
