According to the president of the Spanish multinational, the sale of $500 million worth of its assets in Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua and Panama will serve to "enhance" the company in the region.
Cesar Alierta, chairman of Telefónica, said the sale, in which it is not control that is being transfered, but merely ownership, "will enhance the Central American market because it provides a local vision" for the business.
The Spanish telecom company has reached an agreement with Corporación Multi Inversiones to sell, for $500 million, 40% of its assets in El Salvador, Guatemala, Nicaragua and Panama.
The operator will maintain control of operations in the four countries which will be integrated into a single joint venture.

With an installed capacity of 16.4 megawatts, the new Santa Teresa hydroelectric plant over the river Polochic, belonging to CMI, was inaugurated on Thursday, the first of several projects that will increase the company’s generating capacity.
The Guatemalan chain has announced its expansion plans for 2012, with the opening of eight new stores in Guatemala and their foray into the Salvadoran market.
Walter de la Cruz, general manager of the chain said the projected investment is $1.4 million.
"By 2012 the firm's goal is to have 32 stores nationwide, and also activate international expansion, so the second half of the year could see the opening of its first store in El Salvador", published Siglo21.com.gt.
Café Barista has confirmed its regional expansion plans for 2011; it will start in El Salvador, followed by Costa Rica and Panama.
Walter de la Cruz, president of Café Barista, told Nacion.com that they are preparing their strategic expansion plan, defining opening dates and locations.
Additionally, the company plans to open eight new stores in Guatemala, in addition to its current 17 coffee shops.
The Guatemalan chain announced a partnership with Corporación Multi Inversiones for the opening of new stores.
Eight new stores, which will join the 17 already existing, will open in Guatemalan territory.
Walter De La Cruz, CEO of Barista told Prensalibre.com that "... through this alliance, we expect to open the first store outside national territory, in the Salvadoran capital."
The Guatemalan company will open 5 new restaurants in the country in the first half of next year.
These new restaurants will be located in rural areas and will generate 100 jobs, said José Villalobos, commercial manager of the chain.
"Pollo Campero is in the midst of a global expansion process. In one month it will open a restaurant in India and is negotiating another in Saudi Arabia. It is also located in China", reported Nacion.com.
