Panama's first-quarter exports totaled US$414 million, of which the leading share – US$125.7 million – went to the United States.

The US was followed by the Benelux countries, the United Kingdom, Spain and China, in that order. Not one Central American country made the top five.

Growth in Exports from Panama to U.S.

May 2013

Following the enactment of the Trade Promotion Agreement, between November 2012 and March 2013 Panamanian exports to the U.S. grew by 34%.

This was explained Rebecca Blank, Acting Secretary of Commerce of the United States, during her visit to Panama on a trade mission with 20 representatives from U.S. companies.

U.S. implements TPC with Panama

Three federal agencies have adjusted their procedures in order to implement the Buy American status for certain products and construction services from Panama.

The agreement provides for non-discriminatory treatment for eligible products and services in Panama.

In the interim the three agencies have identified Panama as a country with which it has a free trade agreement.

Delay in Entry into Force of PTA with U.S.

September 2012

The Chamber of Commerce, Industries and Agriculture in Panama has expressed concern over the lack of discussion of the law reforms agreed in the Trade Promotion Agreement.

A statement from the Commerce, Industry and Agriculture of Panama (CCIAP) reads:

The CCIAP expressed concern about the delay in the entry into force of the TPC with the U.S.

Obama’s Exports Plan Includes Free Trade Agreements

February 2010

Obama’s plan to double U.S. exports includes passing free trade agreements with Panama, Colombia and South Korea.

Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner told the House of Representatives: “I think it requires we work together to pass strong trade agreements that will expand opportunities in ... foreign markets. We can't let other countries go and compete away those markets from us”.
