Europe aims for 90 percent tariff-free trade with Central America

The European Union expects Central America to phase out tariffs on 90 percent of its products under a proposed free trade agreement between the two regions.

But Karl-Friedrich Falkenberg, the EU's deputy director of foreign trade, said the proposal would be put on the table when the two sides meet in Lima at the summit of leaders of the EU, Latin America and the Caribbean.
Central American commerce officials are scheduled to meet tomorrow with Peter Mandelson, the EU's trade commissioner to review the current state of negotiations.

Central American trade and economy ministers will meet with the European trade commissioner, Peter Mandelson, on May 15 in Peru, for talks on progress toward a trade association.

One of the main items on the agenda will be the subsidies that Europe grants to its farmers.
The meeting will be held on the eve of the Fifth European Union-Latin American and Caribbean Summit, which is being hosted in Lima.
