XAGRO S.A. Along with its partner JAM LLC, announced today that they will begin testing the commercial production of cassava chips to be used for the production of ethanol fuel in China. Cassava is used in other countries as a sustainable biomass source but this is the first project of this scale to be done in Nicaragua.

If tests are successful, Xagro will be awarded contracts that will create hundreds of direct jobs and benefit thousands of farmers in the Region Atlántico Sur (RAAS) of Nicaragua.

“Obviously we are very excited about this project” stated Ronald Ehli President of XAGRO S.A.. “We have been working to make this a reality for over a year” Ehli continued.

Jay Gray, CEO of JAM, LLC stated that “working with XAGRO we will develop long term programs for the thousands of growers”. Jay stated that programs would likely include education to improve crop yields, supplies of agro chemicals, and cash advances to help pay for field labor.

Testing will include evaluating several different varieties of cassava searching for high starch content, which is needed in the ethanol process, along with the production of several thousand metric tons of cassava chips that will be sent to China later this year for approval.
