Wood: Regional Sales Fall 27%

In the first six months of 2020, Central America exported $102 million in wood and wood products, 27% less than in the same period of 2019.

Regional Business Down
Between January and June 2019 and the same period of 2020 the exported value of wood and its manufactures from Central America reported a 27% drop, going from $139 million to $102 million.

For the first half of 2020, all countries reduced their foreign sales year-on-year. Nicaragua's exports decreased by 19%, Costa Rica's by 22%, Guatemala's by 27%, Honduras' by 28%, Panama's by 32% and El Salvador's by 66%.

Costa Rica and Panama, Main Sellers
From January to June 2020, the main exporter was Costa Rica, with $29 million, followed by Panama, with $26 million, Guatemala, with $23 million, Honduras, with $17 million, Nicaragua, with $4 million and El Salvador, with $900 thousand.

Destination of Exports
In the first six months of 2019, 36% of the value exported from the region was destined for India, 19% for the USA, 6% for China and 2% for Vietnam.

India is the country of destination for Central American exports that has grown the most for the period in question in recent years. In 2012 it represented 18% of the total value exported, and in 2020 it reached 36%.

Note:
This analysis was conducted considering raw wood, sawn, sawed, veneered, plywood, stratified, boards, firewood, barrels, crates, pallets, load platforms, sleepers and other similar items. Charcoal is not included in the report.

In 2016, Central American countries exported $223 million worth of wood and its manufactures, and the value exported to India grew by 20% compared to 2015.
