Wood Products: Business with Potential

Because wood is being demanded for different types of use, opportunities have been identified to design and manufacture several differentiated products with high marketing potential.

According to Guatemalan businessmen in the sector, wood is no longer being used only for the manufacture of furniture or decoration of residences, but is also being demanded in corporate spaces such as offices and work environments, and in places such as retail stores, restaurants, hotels and hospitals.

Regarding new trends, Germán Cerezo, president of the Commission of Furniture Manufacturers (Cofama), explained to Prensalibre.com that "... the corporate part is promoting the manufacture of floors, wall coverings, walls with accents, where the warmth and quality of the wood is highlighted, because customers feel better in these environments. Also in the retail part, where it is used to give a warm atmosphere inside the store."

The article adds that "... Also, among the trends should be taken into account the colors, some dyes that are fashionable, especially natural, since the organic side of wood does not require large investments, is an advantage for manufacturers."

CentralAmericaData reports state that between January and September 2018 the main exporter of wood and its manufactures in Central America was Costa Rica, with $58 million, followed by Panama, with $49 million, Honduras, with $45 million, Guatemala, with $42 million, Nicaragua, with $6 million and El Salvador, with $5 million.

A business conference for companies working in the timber and related products sector has been organized for November 4, 2016 in Heredia, Costa Rica.

As part of the sixth edition of the Vive La Madera Fair and C-Neutralidad 2016, LaOnf, the FONAFIFO and the MINAE will be hosting business negotiations for timber and related products, which will be assisted by PROCOMER.
