Wines: Business with Germany up 7%

From January to September 2020, Central American wine imports totaled $47 million, and regional purchases from German companies increased 7% compared to the same period in 2019.

Regional Business Down
Between January-September 2019 and the same period in 2020 the imported value of wines in Central America registered a 22% decrease, going from $61 million to $47 million.

For the periods in question, imports from Chile and Spain decreased by 25% and 19%, respectively. Purchases from Germany increased by 7%, from $600 thousand to $700 thousand.

Costa Rican Companies, Main Buyers
From January to September 2020 the main importer in the region continued to be Costa Rica, with $18 million, followed by Panama, with $12 million, Guatemala, with $8 million, El Salvador and Honduras with $3 million each, and Nicaragua with $2 million.

Nicaragua was the only market in the region that during the first six months of the year recorded an increase in its purchases, reporting a 9% year-on-year variation.

In the case of Costa Rica, imports fell by 13%, in Honduras and El Salvador by 20%, in Guatemala by 29% and in Panama by 32%.

Chile, Main Supplier to the Region
In the first nine months of the year, 31% of the value of imports from Central America came from Chile, 24% from Spain, 11% from the USA, 10% from Italy, 8% from Argentina, 6% from France and 2% from Germany.

For the months in question in recent years, Spain is the market of origin of purchases that has grown the most, rising from 11% in 2012 to 24% in 2020.

Alcoholic beverages: Imports increase 25%

October 2018

During the first three months of the year, the countries of the region reported imports of alcoholic beverages for $88 million, 25% more than what was reported in the same quarter of 2017.
