Will the Guatemala - Peru FTA Take Effect?

A proposal has been made to reactivate the process so that the commercial agreement, which was approved by the Peruvian congress in 2013, completes the ratification process in the South American country and enters into force.

Monday, June 12, 2017

The main factor that has delayed the entry into force of the Free Trade Agreement between Guatemala and Peru has to do with the conflict that arose in 2013 due to the tariffs imposed by the Andean nation on imports of sugar from Guatemala, which resulted in the Guatemalan government filing a complaint with the WTO.

"... According to the ambassador of Peru in Guatemala, Amador Velásquez García-Monterroso, the agreement has been stalled since 2013 but from the foreign ministries of both countries contact has resumed and it is expected that the impasses will soon be solved in order for it to enter into force."

Elperiodico.com.gt reports that "... The balance of trade between the two countries is favorable to Peru.  In 2016 Guatemalan exports to that country totaled US $50.8 million, while imports were US $85.1 million, according to figures from the Bank of Guatemala (Banguat)."
