Venezuela Interested in Costa Rican Meat

A delegation of Venezuelan businessmen is in Costa Rica negotiating conditions to buy meat.

This process started several months ago. Three weeks ago, Venezuelan health officials inspected three slaughterhouses.

Mazzero, president of Corfoga, an association fostering livestock breeding, told Nacion.com: "Our ambassador in Venezuela, Vladimir de la Cruz, expressed that the Venezuelans come here to buy our excess production".

China: Main Market for Costa Rican Meat

During the first four months of 2021, companies operating in Costa Rica sold $22 million worth of beef to China, this figure represents 54% of the total exported by the Central American country.

Data from the Foreign Trade Promotion Agency (Procomer) show that from January to April of this year, Costa Rican beef exports to China totaled $22 million, to the U.S. $8 million and to Puerto Rico $5 million.

Between January and November 2014, after obtaining sanitary permits, two companies managed to export to beef to China for $9.1 million.

In one year, shipments of this product to China grew by 707.1%, making the country the third destination of our bovine meat exports.

Central America Splits EU Beef Quota in Equal Parts

Central America’s beef industry has distributed the quota of meat that can be sent tariff-free to the European Union equally among all countries.

The Central American Federation of the Beef Industry, meeting in Guatemala, established that each country will be allowed to ship 1,583 tons per year.

Venezuela Imposes New Rules for Imported Meat

Meat exporters are now required to ship specialized cuts, plus adding labels to specify type and weight of each item.

Nicaragua, an important exporter of meat to Venezuela, has complained that these measures were not included in an agreement signed by Nicaraguan slaughterhouses and Venezuelan entrepreneurs.
