Variation of Imports by Market
During the first quarter of 2020, companies in Panama, Costa Rica and Honduras increased their purchases of vehicle batteries from Mexican companies, reporting year-on-year variations of 63%, 9% and 1%, respectively.

In the cases of El Salvador, Guatemala and Nicaragua, for the period in question imports from Mexico fell, recording variations with respect to the same period in 2019 of -2%, -13% and -41%, in that order.

Guatemala, the largest purchaser of Mexican accumulators
In the first four months of 2020, the main Central American buyer of electric accumulators from Mexico was Guatemala, with $9 million, followed by Honduras and Costa Rica, with $5 million each.

For the four-month period under review, imports from El Salvador and Nicaragua amounted to $4 million in both cases, and purchases by Panamanian companies amounted to $2 million.

More Mexican vehicle batteries in Central America
Between the first four months of 2019 and the same period in 2020, the value imported by countries in the region increased by 4%, from $27 million to $28 million.

This rise contrasts with the decline reported from January to April 2019, when the year-on-year variation was 10%.
