Vegetables: Regional Sales up to September 2019

From January to September 2019, Central American exports of vegetables totaled $159 million, 21% more than reported in the same period in 2018, a rise that is explained by the behavior of sales to companies in the United States.

Guatemala Leads Regional Sales
In the first nine months of 2019 the main exporter in Central America was Guatemala with $67 million, followed by Honduras with $55 million, Costa Rica with $25 million, Nicaragua with $9 million, El Salvador with $3 million and Panama with $1.7 million.

Export Volume Up 4%
Between January and September 2018 and the same period in 2019, the volume of vegetable exports recorded a 7% increase, rising from 160,000 tons to 172,000 tons.

For the periods in question, the value exported also registered a positive variation, rising from $132 million to $159 million.

Price of Exports
Between January 2012 and September 2019, the average price per kilo of fresh and refrigerated vegetable exports continues to register a cyclical behavior, with maximum prices in the months of December and November each year, and minimum values in the months of July to September.

U.S. Main Central American Market
As of June 2019, the United States was the main buyer of vegetables from companies in the region, accounting for 74% of the total value exported from Central America, followed by the United Kingdom with 7%, the Netherlands with 4%, Canada with 3% and France with 2%.

In the current context of health crisis, according to forecasts of CentralAmericaData to extend for two months the quarantine measures and mobility restriction, it is predicted that at the end of the year the annualized demand for vegetables and fresh vegetables in Central America will have decreased, low that would be partly explained by the behavior in the consumption of avocado.

Last year, regional exports of vegetables totaled $180 million, 10% more than 2017, a rise explained by the behavior of company sales in Guatemala and Honduras.

June 2019

During the first nine months of 2018, regional vegetable exports totaled $132 million, 15% more than in the same period in 2017, an increase explained by the behavior of company sales in Guatemala and Honduras.
