Vegetables: Regional Sales up 44%

From January to September 2020, Central American vegetable exports totaled $229 million, 44% more than what was reported in the same period of 2019, an increase that is largely explained by the behavior of sales to U.S. companies.

Guatemala Leads Regional Sales
In the first nine months of 2020 the leading exporter in Central America was Guatemala with $127 million, followed by Honduras with $63 million, Costa Rica with $25 million, Nicaragua with $10 million, El Salvador with $2 million and Panama with $1.8 million.

For the period in question, foreign sales of Guatemalan companies increased by 91% year-on-year, those of Panama by 23%, Honduras by 15%, Nicaragua by 13% and Costa Rica by only 3%.

In the case of Salvadoran companies, their exports fell by 30%.

Regional Exports Grow 44%
For the periods in question, the value exported registered a positive variation, rising from $159 million to $229 million.

Between January-September 2019 and the same period of 2020, the exported volume of vegetables recorded a 20% increase, rising from 171 thousand tons to 206 thousand tons.

Export Prices on the Rise
Between June 2018 and June 2020, the average price per kilo of regional exports of fresh and refrigerated vegetables recorded a 49% increase, rising from $0.73 to $1.09 per kilo.

U.S., Main Market for Central American Exports
As of September 2020, the United States was the main buyer of vegetables from companies in the region, accounting for 76% of the total value exported from Central America, followed by the United Kingdom with 8%, the Netherlands with 4%, Canada with 2%, France with 2% and Spain with 1%.

For the period in question in recent years, the United Kingdom is the export destination market that has increased its share the most, since in 2012 it accounted for 4% and in 2020 the proportion rose to 8%.

December 2019

From January to June 2019 Central American exports of vegetables totaled $105 million, 5% more than what was reported in the same period in 2018, a rise explained by the behavior of sales to companies in the United States.

Vegetables: Exports up 15%

June 2019

During the first nine months of 2018, regional vegetable exports totaled $132 million, 15% more than in the same period in 2017, an increase explained by the behavior of company sales in Guatemala and Honduras.
