Vegetables: Regional Sales Go Down 5%

From January to March 2019, Central American exports of vegetables totaled $56 million, 5% less than what was reported in the same period in 2018, a decrease explained by the behavior of sales to companies in the United States.

Honduras and Guatemala Leading Regional Sales
In the first three months of 2019 the main exporters in Central America were Guatemala with $22 million, followed by Honduras with $20 million, Costa Rica with $7 million, Nicaragua with $3 million, El Salvador with $2 million and Panama with $0.9 million.

Exported Volume Falls 4%
Between the first quarter of 2018 and the same period of 2019 the volume exported of vegetables registered a 4% decrease, falling from 67 thousand tons to 64 thousand tons.

For the periods in question the value exported also registered a negative variation, falling from $59 million to $56 million.

Export Prices
Between January 2012 and March 2019, the average price per kilo of exports of fresh and refrigerated vegetables continues to record a cyclical behavior, with maximum prices in December and November of each year, and minimum values in July to September.

U.S. Main Central American Market
As of March 2019, the U.S. was the main buyer of vegetables from companies in the region, accounting for 69% of the total value exported from Central America, followed by the United Kingdom with 9%, the Netherlands with 8% and France with 2%.

During the first nine months of 2018, regional vegetable exports totaled $132 million, 15% more than in the same period in 2017, an increase explained by the behavior of company sales in Guatemala and Honduras.

October 2018

The countries of the region exported fresh and refrigerated vegetables for $59 million from January to March 2018, 25% more than in the same period in 2017.
