Vegetables: Opportunities in the Salvadoran Market

The unsatisfied demand for vegetables in the Salvadoran market opens opportunities for businessmen in the region to place their products in the coming years.

A diagnosis by the Foundation for Investment and Development of Exports of Honduras (Fide), estimates that by 2021 in El Salvador the unsatisfied demand for white onion, carrot and potato, together will total about 30 million tons.

Based on the study in Honduras, export potential from Honduras to El Salvador has been detected in fresh fruits such as bananas, oranges, watermelon, pineapple, melon, avocado, papaya, fresh vegetables such as tomatoes, cabbage, lettuce, white onion, carrot, potato, squash, cauliflower, broccoli, sweet chili, red onion and cucumber."

The article adds that "Fide recommends analyzing the opportunities for Honduran producers to focus on marketing the eight fruits and 12 vegetables identified in the study. Particularly in those that represent greater opportunities: tomato, cabbage, banana, banana, orange and lettuce."

CentralAmericaData reports state that during the first six months of 2018, the main exporter of fresh and refrigerated vegetables in Central America was Guatemala, with $38 million, followed by Honduras, with $35 million, Costa Rica, with $17 million, Nicaragua with $6 million, Panama, with $3 million and El Salvador with $2 million.
