Vegetables: Approval to Keep Exporting to Europe

After concluding an audit that began in 2016, European Union authorities notified Costa Rica that it will be able to continue exporting its organic vegetables to European countries.

The Costa Rican government reported that the European Union (EU) notified the State Phytosanitary Service (SPS) of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock that the audit initiated in 2016 was completed with the aim of evaluating the actions of the Unit of Accreditation and Registration of Organic Agriculture (ARAO) of the SPS, resulting in continued recognition under the category of Third Country for Costa Rica.

Fernando Araya, Director of the SPS, said that they are "... very satisfied with the results of the Audit, the Europeans corroborate to us that the way of working of the SPS is conforming and giving very good results, which translates into benefits for our exporters and the image of the country."

The document disseminated by SPS explains that "... The field visits took place in 2016 in the areas of Talamanca, Sarapiquí and Cartago, the origin of the products with the highest export volume: banana -fresh and processed- and pineapple. Among the actions audited, to mention some, are the supervision of SPS employees in the processes carried out by Certifying Agencies in compliance with Regulation on Organic Agriculture No. 29782-MAG, the follow-up of the registration of inspections, findings, their follow-up and their correction, the documentation generated in all previous processes, as well as the internal institutional procedures of the ARAO Unit."

"In 2017, a total of 16,325,597 kg of organic plant products were exported to the European Union."

Honduras: Exports of Organic Products

Last year exports of 17 types of fruits, vegetables and organic grains may registered a 4% increase compared to 2016.

In the last ten years, the number of agricultural producers dedicated to the cultivation of fruits, vegetables and organic grains increased from 1,500 to 6,451, according to figures from the National Secretariat for Health and Food Safety (SENASA). Also in the last decade, it is estimated that the planted area grew from 4,400 hectares to 31 thousand hectares.

The MAG will support certification agencies and producers in complying with new requirements.

An official delegation is inspecting phytosanitary conditions in the Central American country in order to allow imports of beef, leather and milk powder.

A Statement from the Ministry of Agriculture reads:

Costa Rica continues its attempts to open up new export markets for products of animal origin, by receiving Russian health authorities who are conducting an audit visit which runs from May 22 until June 1.

Costa Rica: Europe Renews Organic Farming Approval

With the equivalence renewal, Costa Rica remains in the EU’s list of third party nations, for an unlimited time, and on Switzerland’s list until 2013, allowing it to export organic products to the European market with a certification issued by national certification bodies under Costa Rican regulations and with the supervision of the SFE, an entity qualified at the national level.
