Vaccines: Purchases from Russia up 54% in 2020

During 2020, companies in the region allocated $134 million for the import of vaccines for human use, and purchases from Russian companies increased 54% over what was reported in 2019.

Panamanian and Guatemalan Companies, Main Buyers
In 2020 the main importer of vaccines for human use in Central America was Guatemala, with $35 million, followed by Costa Rica, with $27 million, Panama, with $25 million, Honduras, with $17 million, El Salvador, with $16 million and Nicaragua, with $14 million.

One of the six countries recorded a year-on-year increase in purchases. In Nicaragua, imports increased 21%.

El Salvador, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras and Panama were the markets that registered negative variations, reporting decreases of 7%, 8%, 26%, 33% and 65%, respectively.

Regional Business Variation
Between 2019 and 2020, the value imported into the region decreased considerably, going from $203 million to $134 million, which is equivalent to a variation of -34%.

In contrast to the behavior of regional imports, for the periods in question, purchases from companies in Russia increased from $5 million to $7.7 million, equivalent to a variation of 54%.

USA and Belgium, Main Suppliers
In 2020, 25% of the value imported into the region came from the USA, 22% from Belgium, 9% from the Netherlands, 9% from India, 8% from South Korea, 8% from France and 6% from Russia.

Purchases from the U.S. have lost ground in recent years, accounting for 44% of total regional imports in 2010 and falling to 25% in 2020.

From January to March 2020, companies in the region bought vaccines for human use abroad for $28 million, and 56% of total imports were made by companies in Costa Rica and Panama.
