Uncertainty Due to Wave of Arrests

In Nicaragua, following the arrests of political and business leaders, uncertainty has increased after local authorities arrested Luis Alberto Rivas Anduray, Executive President of Banpro.

In the last weeks Cristiana Chamorro, Arturo Cruz, Felix Maradiaga Blandon and Juan Sebastian Chamorro have been arrested, these people were presidential pre-candidates and are accused of multiple crimes.

In addition to the capture of political leaders, there are business leaders who have been victims of these illegitimate procedures, as on June 8 the former president of the Superior Council of Private Enterprise (COSEP) and current president of the Consultative Committee for Economic Integration (CCIE), Jose Adan Aguerri, was arrested.

Authorities continue with the wave of arrests and on June 15 arrested Luis Alberto Rivas Anduray. According to a press release from the National Police, the Banpro director is being investigated for "... acts which undermine the independence of sovereignty and self-determination, inciting foreign interference in internal affairs, requesting military interventions, organizing with financing from foreign powers to carry out acts of terrorism and destabilization, proposing and managing economic, commercial and financial operations blockades against the country and its institutions, demanding, exalting and encouraging the imposition of sanctions against the State of Nicaragua and its citizens, and harming the supreme interests of the nation."

The official document assures that the Police "... carries out all the pertinent investigative diligences and will refer the investigated person to the competent authorities for his prosecution and determination of criminal responsibilities."

On the morning of June 16, the financial entity Banco de la Produccion (Banpro), made a statement regarding the matter and declared that they are "... sure of the moral quality of Dr. Rivas and are confident that his situation will be clarified.  As a responsible institution, we ratify our adherence to the laws in force in the country."
