In the US State Department's list most countries are in category 3 that Costa Rica now has, among them Latin American and European nations. Only 16 countries are in category 2 and only two countries are in category 1.

The case of Costa Rica is similar to that of Guatemala, a country in the region that was also downgraded to a level 3 travel alert at the end of September.

Gustavo Segura, Minister of Tourism, explained that "... this is excellent news for the country given that travel categories in times of pandemic become more important."

"The United States is the main market for tourists to Costa Rica and this change is crucial 19 days after allowing the entry of all US citizens and residents by air to Costa Rica -regardless of the state where they live and as long as they meet the entry requirements," added Segura.
