US$5.5 million loan for bridge to link Panama and Costa Rica

The Andean Development Corporation announced a US$5.5 million loan for the construction of a bridge over the Sixaola river, which forms the border between Panama and Costa Rica.

The 260-meters bridge will replace a railway link that has fallen into a serious state of disrepair, the corporation said from its headquarters in Caracas.
The loan is in addition to a US$7.9 million credit that the corporation had granted Costa Rica for the projects. The two loans will cover the full cost of the US$13.4 million investment.

Both works will be components of a single tender that will be convened by the next government.

The cost of the work will not be released until next April, but it is estimated that the fourth bridge over the Panama Canal alone could cost about $800 million, a project which will be funded by Japan.

The Ministry of Public Works (MOP) has put out to tender the construction and renovation of four bridges.

On June 16, the MOP tendered the renovation of three major bridges. Two of the bridges are at El Tule and Colima, 45.5 and 47.5 kilometers from the Troncal del Norte, San Salvador, in which $3.5 million will be invested.

Worth $5 million, the 210 meter bridge links the port town of Corinto with the rest of the country.

The responsible of the project was Italian corporation Astaldi, who also repaired 20 km of the Chinandega-Corinto highway and 5 km of roads linking Chinandega with El Viejo.

Costa Rica backs plan to develop Panama border region

July 2008

President Oscar Arias of Costa Rica signed a law to use a US$9.2 million Inter-American Development Bank credit for the development of the Sixaola river basin, which Costa Rica shares with Panama.

Costa Rica's government is contributing US$2.8 million to make a total of US$12 million for a program of sustainable development in the region.
