Cruise Tourism in Central America Growing

Countries are making significant efforts to strengthen this sector, according to the Tourism Promotion Agency of Central America.

Honduras recently reported the arrival of 470,000 cruise passengers in the first six months of 2011, over 188 cruise ships, 115 of which landed in Mohogany Bay, which recently opened a new dock. According to the country’s authorities, the activity in the country earned it $40 million, an increase of 17% compared with 2010.

Guatemala, meanwhile, confirmed the arrival of 62 cruise ships in 2011, and has exonerated from maritime tax all cruise ship tourists who stay in the country for at least 72 hours.

"In the case of Panama's Tourism Authority, it has set as one of its objectives for the 2010-2011 tourism campaign the promotion cruise tourism through companies such as Carnival Corp. and Royal Caribbean Cruises .

In this way, according to forecasts, it is expected that in the new season 185 cruises will stop Panama or a total of 320 000 passengers, which will have a significant impact on the national economy. "

In February 88,000 Tourists to Land in Roatan

During this month a total of 37 cruise ships will dock in the ports of Roatan and Mahogany Bay, each which will be carrying between 2000 and 3000 tourists.

As occurred in January, February will be another busy month for tourism in Roatan, the Bay Islands with the arrival of more than 88,000 cruise ship passengers, on board 37 ships which will dock every day at the ports of Roatan and MahoganyBay, said authorities from the Secretariate and Honduran Tourism Institute.

Honduras: Cruise Tourism Increases

Between January and July this year the number of cruise passengers arriving in Roatan increased by 12% compared to the same period in 2010.

Tourism in Roatan continues to grow significantly. In the first half of the year 200 ships arrived on the island, of which 78 entered through the port of Roatan and the remaining 122 via Mahogani Bay.

Honduras Inaugurates Cruise Ship Pier

Carnival Corporation's $70 million cruise ship pier was inaugurated in Mahony Bay.

With the new facility, the company can accommodate two 4.500 passenger ships simultaneously.

Ana Abarca, Tourism Minister, told Laprensahn.com: "...if Carnival's projections prove correct, we will receive some 500.000 tourists from cruise ships. This would imply sales for $850 million, as every tourist spends an average $107 in the country".

New Cruise Ship Port in Roatán Opens in November

The second cruise ship port in the Bay lslands will open on November 20, after a $62 million investment.

It is the first phase of Carnival Cruise Line's project in Roatán, and boasts 7.000 constructed square meters, including commercial space.
