Tourism: Sustainability Business Certification

In order for Panama's tourism companies to obtain the sustainability seal, they must undergo external audits on topics such as responsible management, quality control, safety, and others.

With the changes to Decree-Law 82 of December 23, 2008, companies and individual auditors can perform external audits and that large and micro tourism companies are interested in the implementation of the Sustainable Tourism Standard, informed the Tourism Authority of Panama (ATP).

From the ATP statement:

The amendments to Decree Law 82 of December 23, 2008, which includes among its purposes the definition of tourism sustainability parameters, was published in the Gaceta Oficial.

As a result of the changes to the decree, companies and individual auditors can carry out external audits and large and micro tourism companies are interested in the application of the Tourism Sustainability Standard.

Some 17 companies, in Chiriquí, Veraguas, Herrera, Los Santos, Bocas del Toro, Colón and Coclé, which provide lodging, guide services, tourism operators and maritime transport, aim to enter this regulation to obtain the sustainability seal.

The standard incorporates topics such as responsible management, quality control, safety, water, waste, energy, ecosystem protection, natural and cultural heritage and pollution.
